When I see some wonder in the sky, I don't usually understand it. I just love it.  Of course, I rarely catch all the wonderful and strange occurrences, and appreciate weatherman sharing the photos and information. 

 

 Rainy season is also hurricane season. We have had NO hurricanes in the Atlantic so far this season. It is unbelievable. Poor Hawaii has had their version which is called a hurricane, a cyclone, or a tropical cyclone.

We have been having great thunderstorms in the last few weeks usually in the early evenings. The moist air and heat build up over the Gulf in these outrageous temperatures this summer and move inland as a storm in the evening. Saturday night's storm was magnificent and caused a flicker of lost electricity in my home. Below are photos taken in Fort Meyers by JoshFL.

Rainy Season Plus Craziness in Florida

 

 

The other day I had an appointment first thing in the morning. Upon my return, tiny sprinkles were starting to blow in the wind against me. A heavy rainfall is expected later, but the moist air felt good on my face.  I captured a few photos of the cloudy sky to share today. Although we have blue skies the majority of the time in Florida, it's not always true in the rainy season.

 Now I am reporting on the evil people do to make more money. Two men thought nesting birds drove customers away. The answer was to try to drive the birds away with toxic mothballs. It boggles the mind that they thought adding toxic chemicals to a sandy beach was acceptable. I hope they get jail time as well as hefty fines:

 

 

 The "Mothball Mystery" has led to two arrests.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Robert Czyszczon, owner of the Plaza Beach Hotel, and Christopher Monroe, owner of Chris' Beachside Bar, were arrested Wednesday following an investigation into hundreds of toxic mothballs that were scattered across St. Pete Beach earlier this year. Investigators allege the mothballs were placed on the beach to deter protected black skimmer birds from nesting there.

FWC says surveillance footage, Walmart purchase records, and other evidence—including text messages obtained during the investigation—helped connect the two men to the case.

They are facing charges that include felony commercial littering and attempting to take or harass a state-threatened species.

If these allegations are true, what a bunch of losers. Protected wildlife deserves better than this, and trying to solve a problem by spreading toxic chemicals on a public beach is unbelievably unbelievable.

Black Skimmers:   Each summer, Black Skimmer colonies return to nest along Florida’s beaches, including St. Pete Beach. Though they come back every year, their nesting locations often shift dramatically from season to season. From May through September, these unique seabirds lay 3–5 eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand. The eggs hatch after 21–25 days, and both parents share the duties of incubating and feeding their chicks.

First Week in May

 

 

 As I reported last week, the weatherman's predictions for rain were true. Rain came Saturday and was sporadic until Sunday afternoon.  The amount of rain didn't affect the drought conditions much. Not enough rain to make up the inches we have not received in the last 6 months.

 

My red amaryllis has put on a great show in the last week. As the number of flowers increased, I just smiled more.

End of April at the Condo

  

 

The weather here in central Florida has been hot and dry. We've had little rain for months. Over half of Florida is experiencing "extreme drought". Like Georgia, Florida is dealing with widespread wildfires around the state. Scientists warn the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season could be the most dangerous in history.

 

 

 

 There is a prediction of rain this weekend on today's weather report. I say "from your mouth to God's ear, please".  That's enough bad news. You know I'm an optimist, so let's look at my blue views and my potted red/white amaryllis blooms here at the condo. 

 

 Note:  Amaryllis thrive in Florida, blooming in spring (typically April) with minimal care. Plant bulbs in well-drained soil with the top third above ground in partial to full sun. They are, for the most part, easy to care for, notes South Florida Plant Guide. Protect them from frost, water sparingly to avoid rot, and fertilize in summer to ensure reblooming

Sunday, February 1, 2026 on Crystal River Update on Manatees & Freezing Cold

 

 

 

 Higher Perspectives in Crystal River, Florida is a drone service with a Facebook account. Below is from a Facebook post on 2/1/26:

  

Freezing cold temperatures have the #manatees gathered by the hundreds at the various #springs in #crystalriver Sunday morning. #ThreeSisterSprings had the largest #cuddlepuddle by far. Easily 500+ there alone today. King, Magnolia and Jurassic were also busy. Will probably do a second run today as they usually lag about a day behind the cold front for real big numbers.

 

 

 

 

 

 Weather is still freezing at night in central Florida. A second cold front expected to move in on Wednesday. It is Tuesday at 10 am and current temperature is 50 degrees F. It should be a few degrees higher this afternoon, but it dives low tonight again.  This keeps knocking the camellia blooms off of the two bushes here by my building.  Prediction for return of warm, Florida weather is next week by Tuesday.  Stay tuned for more developments.

 

 I don't have snow, but I do miss how many warm days of camellia blooms I had last year.
